Friday and Saturday DISD Sessions
Data Access Worldwide will have their traditional State of the Union address. A general status report on current projects and future plans for Data Access products. Presenter: Stephen W. Meeley
Data Access will have several sessions over the two days.
The Visual DataFlex AJAX Framework - The AJAX Framework is an application building tool kit designed to help developers deliver rich, visually exciting, browser based business solutions. DISD Attendees will be provided with the latest edition of the VDF AJAX framework. Presenter: Vincent Oorsprong
Visual DataFlex 12 - a full introduction to the power, productivity, scope and elegance of the newest Visual DataFlex. Emphasis will be placed on how developers can get immediate benefits from version 12. Presenter: John Tuohy
Building and leveraging Visual DataFlex 12 Libraries - Libraries are an exciting new facility of VDF 12. They are a group of classes that are defined to be used by multiple workspaces. Any Workspace may include any number of libraries. This presentation will develop a conceptual understanding of Libraries and use a live example of Library creation to demonstrate the power and capability of the feature. Presenter: Stephen W. Meeley
Electos v3 -- Electos has just undergone a major revision adding a completely overhauled user interface, new capabilities, a web shop and more. This presentation will include:
- A brief history of Electos explaining its origin, the last release and it’s prior appearance*
- Show and demonstrate of the key features of Electos 3.0
Presenter: Thijs Nijhuis
There are several developer sponsored sessions during the conference.
Session 1: A real world VDF upgrade and integration of a 3.2 character mode point of sale system at J.Renee’ Shoes and More. This session will show how the DOS application was integrated with VDF using an Outlook style treeview menu system, converting some 3.2 programs to VDF and using ftp to replace modem transfers. This session will also demonstrate data synchronization of inventory and mailing data using RSYNC. There will also be a demonstration of integrating an inventory lookup using Webapp with a web service. The code for the web service will be documented and handouts available for future reference.
Session 2. Using the Electos site developed on Thursday we will add an inventory lookup link. This will demonstrate using Electos as the front end and using an iframe for data entry and reporting from a separate web application. Data passing techniques using XML will be included to show how to build robust web sites. These techniques will include ASP examples for data retrieval and presentation. The use of cascading style sheets will be included. There will also be examples of various coding methods for accessing the data including using embedded SQL. There will be some limited demonstration of ASP debuggers. This application will be documented and handouts available for attendees to take home and use for future reference.
Session 3. CodeJock Xtreme CommandBars by Tony MacKay
This will demonstrate a very basic App using CodeJock Xtreme CommandBars.
Xtreme CommandBars can be used to replace the Main_Menu, Toolbar and StatusBar in a Dataflex App.
Xtreme CommandBars comes with built in theme support that will allow you to choose from predefined themes such as OfficeXp, Office 2003, Visual Studio .NET, or create your own custom theme.
The Office 2007 style Ribbon Bar component includes enhanced navigation capabilities by grouping menu and toolbar commands into logical blocks that are arranged in tabular format.
After a quick demo of the look and feel of Xtreme CommandBars in a Dataflex App, we’ll dig a little deeper into some of the issues I ran into when converting the Visual Basic examples into Dataflex code.
In closing if anyone would like a copy of the Demo Workspace it will be made available.
Session 4. Pen Input with VDF by Oliver Nelson
We will be showing an application that is being developed especially for pen input. Custom classes have been written and a set of standards developed to make pen input a viable technique in VDF. For pen input (or any other input mechanism for that matter) to be effective, the application must be designed around the constraints/capabilities of that input mechanism. The pen input capabilities built into Windows XP Tablet PC Edition are very basic and rather anemic. Our classes extend upon these in many ways. We will demonstrate gesture recognition, handwriting recognition, factoids, and our extensions to make these features more useful.
In this session we cover the basics of Windows Server installation. We will discuss hardware requirements, service packs, IIS, server roles, terminal services, etc. A Question and Answers session will follow.
10:30 - 12:00 am Advance Client and Server Security
In this session we will discuss strategies and tactics for securing both the client and the server in a Windows Network. A focus on group policy and security templates highlights this session. We will also discuss using the Security configuration and Analysis tools to increase and maintain the quality of security in the organization.
1:30 - 3:00 pm Securing the perimeter with ISA 2006
This session focuses on securing the perimeter of your network using the ISA 2006 firewall appliance. Special attention will be given to the construction and use of filters and policies for controlling and maintaining traffic flows into and out of the network. There will be a discussion of network design and using perimeter networks and routing functions to increase potential security for the network.
3:30 - 5:00 pm VDF and Web Server Installation
This session will be presented by a DISD panel, discussing installation and configuration issues related to DataFlex products, including Electos. This discussion will conclude with the hardware / software configuration to be used as the starting point for sessions on Friday morning
