Data Acess Worldwide Opening by Chip Casanave Synergy 2009 is being planned for the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2009. DAW is looking at holding the event at Florida or New Orleans. DAW is developing a training plan for the US and there is a tarining survey on the website to help them decide on the training activity. Developers should sign up for the E-News bulletin to keep up with what DAW is doing. There has been a change to the licensing with VDF in that a single registration code now controls the connectivity kit for the developers going to client/server database drivers. Electos 3.1 features have been lock down and the beta will be coming out soon. Crystal reports has changed there API interface, therefore DAW needs to revise the interface for VDF2008 and should be done by the 1st quarter. VDF2008 was released to provide support for MS Vista operating system mainly. But this release will also support remote access like Terminal Services & Citrix. The codejock part of VDF will allow developers to modernize the look and feel of there applicattions. The AJAX library extends a developers application desktop look and feel to a Web site. | 2 | Visual Dataflex 2008 by John Touhy There is a new look to the start center, workspaces can be selected, DAW news is displayed. It is recommended that developers should load the studio with the start center displayed, instead of loading the last workspace. Multiple copies of the studio can be loaded and the developer can cut/paste between the studios. The studio now has a Tab interface, allowing the operator to split the tabs and look at both tabs at once. The Tab Rows can be displayed as a single row or as multiple rows. There has been a change to the precompiled package method, but the precompiled package build should be place in the workspace area and NOT in a libary workspace. John demonstarted the use of several of the features: adding new menu items, adding toolbars, applying skins to an application, and Views/Reports can be activate thru a toolbar. | 3 | VDF Management of GPS truck routing by Olvier Nelson & Rod Mundy This was a demostration of Jasper Transmission delivery truck routing system. They interface the routing system to mappiont and put GPS units in the trucks. The trucks can be track at the main office on a map and if the truck does not follow the precribe route it will be shown on a map. The truck driver will also be able to get directions to a delivery location if needed.
DataSlave by Ian Manning A data migration tool that will import, validate, filter, transform and export data. The mitgration setup is done thru a visual display of drag & drop Icon’s and connecting of data elements. There is a discounted price for the product for DISD attendees at www.baycastle.co.uk/vdfoffer.htm Click Here for Ian’s Powerpoint
Windows Vista, Visual Dataflex by John Touhy VDF2008 was released maining to provide MS Vista support. Vista is very particular on were items in the workspace are placed due to the User Access Control (UAC). Under Vista the users are not trust with administrator rights. A user is asked for elevated users rights when adminstrative rights is needed. Users cannot change or copy items to the ’Program files" directory or "Registry" without elevated user rights. Vista has "Virtualization" (DO NOT USE) a copy of your program change will be placed in a virtual user directory when making changes with the user in "elevated user rights", then when the user returns to normal rights the changes are lost, because normal rights will not look in the virtual directory. DAW has revised where it puts items and avoids putting things in restricted areas, in order for VDF to work with the User Access Control. DAW has a checklist on the Website www.visualdataflex.com "Get Ready for Vista" that discusses what should be changed in an application order to work under Vista. Click Here for John’s Powerpoint
Desktop like application-VDF AJAX Library by Harm Wibier The AJAX libary is a set of web tools that will allow the programming of desktop sytle applications to be developed on a Web site. The client side tools include a set HTML, CSS data presentation and Javascript tools. The Javascript tools will process forms, grids, tabs, etc. The Server side has an extra layer of class that communicates with the client tools to process the application data. The classes include Web Server Interface, Session Manager, and Business Process. Click Here for Harm’s Powerpoint
WabApp AJAX interface for Business Process by Dave Martinko Dave uses AJAX to create a Web business process with a status panel, so the operator can monitor the progress of a processing loop being executed thru a web site application. Click Here for Dave’s Samples
Using COM And CodeJock Menus by John Touhy The CodeJock menu control was used as an example of how an application can be customized by using COM objects. The presentation covered the basics of COM objects and explained how the COM classes are structured. We were shown how to import a COM class, create COM objects, how VDF proxy objects interface to the COM object. Com objects must be created when they are need in the application and must be released when done in order to reduce overhead. John discussed the psAutoCreate property values (acDeferredAutoCreate, acNoCreate, acAutoCreate) and when they should be used. Also, reviewed how to defined properties and that these properties must work when the COM object is created and after the COM object is created. Everything that was reviewed can be found in the Help.
Achieving User Interface & Functional Distinction with CodeJock by Dan Levene Anasazi Software is developing a new release of their Healthcare product with a newly designed user interface. They demonstrate a unique user interface that has been designed around the CodeJock components, specifically, the Skin Framework, the Report Control, Docking Panes, Command Bars and the Popup control. This new user interface will allow individuals to tailor their displays to the information the way he or she wants to see it. Their goal is to provide a superior tool that distinguishes itself on its style, usability and reliability.
Getting SaaSy with SOAP by Oliver Nelson Oliver demostrated Adobe Flex or Mozilla XUL front end with a VDF SOAP backend application. This architecture allows for native or near-native application appearance and functionality on multiple operating systems without the need to do ANY porting. Oliver was leaning towards Adobe Flex, but both had their good points and bad points.
Running VDF in a virtualized hardware environment by Scott Myers Scott’s presentation focused on the functionality built into VMware and the hardware requirement for a high availability and functionality network. He reviewed other VM products available, Microsoft VM and Citrix XenSource. Discuss moving a network to a virtualized server environment. The network can be monitor and managed thru a single interface. Redundancy is build into the system in that if a process is interrupted that service can be migrated to different virtual environment without service interruption.
From Vincent’s Laboratory by Vincent Oorsprong The new features in DBexplorer was reviewed filtering, sorting by clicking on the column heading, mouse wheel scrolling in single record mode. Vincent used the order entry system to demonstrate how you can use Microsoft speech controls to read the contents of the forms on the screen. He then took Micosoft speech recognition control and customized the order entry to respond to speech commands, find first record, next record, etc. Several of Vincent’s utilities was demonstrated: focus tree bowser, drag & drop in tree views, object tree browser. Several of CodeJock Controls was dmonstrated to help customize your application. The controls included System Tray Icon, Docking Panels, Task Panel, and an Outlook incorporated in an application.
